Chickens are clever, curious birds who form real friendships within their flock.
Chickens are remarkably perceptive animals. They can recognize dozens of individual faces, solve simple problems, and communicate through more than thirty distinct sounds. When a hen feels calm and content, she may even make a soft purring sound, much like a cat being petted.
Sadly, most chickens raised for food or eggs never get the chance to show any of this. Crowded into cages or barren sheds, they are denied the basic freedom to perch, forage, dust bathe, or feel sunlight on their feathers.
Here at C.A.R.E. Farm Sanctuary, our hens and feathered friends finally get to live as nature intended: exploring the yard, taking dust baths in the sun, perching together at night, and settling into a flock they can truly call family.

Meet our feathered friends!

Emily Chickenson is full of life and reminds us all how important it is to savor the good things and never let life’s setbacks define us.
Emily came to CARE Farm Sanctuary after developing a permanent disability that prevents her from walking like other chickens. But that has never stopped her from embracing life. Using her wings, she flutters wherever she wants to go, and with her beak she happily scratches and forages for tasty bugs. Emily is a social bird who is always happy to see her friends.
One of Emily’s greatest pleasures is a freshly prepared dust bath filled with her favorite blend of herbs, wood ash, diatomaceous earth, and coconut coir. Whether she’s soaking up the sunshine, searching for treats, or enjoying a luxurious spa day, Emily approaches every moment with enthusiasm and joy.
Emily truly lives each day to the fullest, showing us that happiness isn’t about what challenges we face, it’s about making the most of every precious day.
Emily's sponsorship will provide feed and veggies. Sponsorship available for Emily Chickenson is $15 monthly.

Marshall holds a special place in our hearts as the very first duck to call CARE Farm Sanctuary home.
When Marshall first arrived, he was shy and unsure around people. But it didn’t take long for this sweet boy to discover that humans could be friends. Today, Marshall is everyone’s loyal companion, following us around the farm and making sure we stay informed on all the latest happenings. From what the chickens next door are doing, to the pigs’ antics, to his thoughts on the weather, Marshall always has something important to say.
At just five months old, Marshall was found wandering within the Springfield city limits, perhaps a kids Easter ducking who was let go. Sadly, it is estimated roughly 80% to 95% of live animals (such as rabbits, chicks, and ducklings) purchased on a whim for Easter die or are abandoned within their first year. Marshall was captured and held at Animal Control until we welcomed him to the sanctuary.
Marshall is a Pekin duck, a breed raised primarily for meat. Sadly, most Pekin ducks are denied the chance to live out their natural lives. But thanks to compassionate supporters, Marshall’s story became one of hope instead of heartbreak.
Now this handsome, talkative boy spends his days splashing, sunbathing, gossiping with his neighbors, and reminding us that every life, no matter how small or ordinary, is precious and deserving of love. Because of people who believe in sanctuary, Marshall has something so many ducks never receive: the promise of a long, safe, and joyful life.
Daisy's sponsorship will provide mineral blocks, parasite and fly prevention, hoof trims, feed/hay and carrots. Sponsorship available for Daisy is $40 monthly.
